Wiener Staatsoper

The Wiener Staatsoper (Vienna State Opera) was built between 1861 and 1869, and it stands as one of the world’s most prestigious opera houses. Nestled in the heart of Austria’s capital city, this is one of the gems that grace Vienna’s Ringstraße. The opera house inauguration in 1869 as the “Vienna Court Opera,” was attended by Emperor Franz Joseph I and Empress Elisabeth of Austria. During World War II, large parts of the opera house fell victim to Allied bombings. However, the front section, including the exuberant foyer, main stairways, vestibule, and tea room, remained intact. Tragically, the rear section, including the main auditorium, was reduced to rubble. In this devastating event, over 150,000 costumes—intended for more than 120 operas—were lost in flames. Each year, the Vienna Opera Ball transforms the opera house into a dazzling ballroom.
